Hello everyone, this is Mimiko.
I recently passed the TELC B1 exam! I’ve been studying German for a year, so I’m very happy!!
Today, I’d like to share my study methods that helped me achieve a B1 level in one year. First, I’ll reveal the recommended materials I used. I hope this will be helpful for everyone preparing for German exams.
Let’s see together!

Starting to Learn German
In April 2023, I began my life in Germany and started learning German.
I decided to attend a school, so I enrolled in a German public school called “VHS (Volkshochschule).” Since I had zero experience with German, I started in the beginner class. However, the German teacher explained everything in German, so I couldn’t understand anything at first ;(
Looking back, I think learning German in German was the fastest way to improve my German skills.
For those living in foreign countries, it might be beneficial to learn from a German teacher or take online courses from German language schools to get as much exposure to native German as possible.
German Learning Materials I Used
I used a variety of materials for learning German from A1 to B1, including textbooks and online services. First, I will introduce the recommended materials I used for basic learning up to the B1 level!
Textbooks I Used
Schritt Plus Neu
Schritte Plus Neu is designed for beginners (A1) to intermediate learners (B1). It progresses with a story-based structure focused on familiar everyday life themes (the main character from Canada tries to adapt to life in Germany, a sense of familiarity). It covers grammar, vocabulary, conversation, listening, and writing skills in a balanced way, making it easier to absorb the material.
I found this to be the clearest beginner’s textbook, so I used all six books from A.1.1 to B1.2!
Aspekte neu B1 plus
Aspekte neu (B1 plus) is aimed at strengthening B1-level language skills and preparing learners to advance to the next level, B2. Although the vocabulary and content are slightly more challenging than typical B1 materials, mastering this textbook will ensure you pass the B1 Lesen (reading) exam!
Websites I Used
There are many free resources available for learning German. Here are some of the recommended websites that I personally used.
DW Deutsch lernen
DW Deutsch lernen is a site provided by Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, for German learners. This site offers a wealth of learning resources tailored to learners of various levels.
For example, it provides B1-level dramas, news, radio programs, and other level-appropriate content, making it a very useful site for exam preparation.

Easy German
Easy German is a site where you can learn practical German while having fun. Centered around a YouTube channel, it caters to learners of all levels, from beginners to advanced. Through videos with subtitles and real-life conversation examples, you can learn natural and practical German, making your learning process more effective.

Preparation for Exams
Once you have grasped the basics to a certain extent, it’s time to start preparing for exams.
The exam consists of four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, so preparation for each of them is necessary.
Study Materials Used for Exam Preparation
Prüfungstraining Zertifikat Deutsch
This textbook covers comprehensive preparation for the TELC exam. It includes practice exercises for all four sections, vocabulary exercises, and four mock tests.
Since all the preparation is contained in this single textbook, there’s no need to gather other materials. This makes it efficient and highly recommended for focused exam preparation.
Youtube Chennel
For preparation for both oral and written exams, I watched YouTube channels to learn about exam content and phrases.
There are several channels available, but I highly recommend these individuals.

How did it go? Above are the recommended study materials that I have used during my learning journey!
In addition to textbooks, there are plenty of free online resources available, so make sure to utilize them as much as possible☺︎
I hope you all pass B1 exam!!
